From August 2022 through May 2024, I served as a teaching assistant for EDU 310: The American School, taught by Dr. Mario Rios Perez. This course is a requirement of all undergraduate education students in the School of Education. As an educational foundations course, the material looks at the history of schooling and education in the United States, contemporary issues facing students and teachers today, and culturally relevant practices necessary for future teachers.
Over four terms, my teaching responsibilities included:
Leading a weekly discussion section
Attending all lectures
Participating in weekly team meetings
During my weekly discussion sections, my responsibilities included:
Creating discussion section materials for dialogue
Reviewing lectures and key information
Helping students engage and analyze course readings
Facilitating three discussion assignments (critical responses and critical presentations)
Facilitating three course papers and/or projects (educational biography, critical film engagement, final action project)
Creating peer and self-review rubrics for cousre papers and projects
Grading all assignments and class participation
Meeting with students during office hours for additional ongoing support
In Fall 2023 and Spring 2024, I offered one lecture for all students in the course on environmental racism and US schooling.
In Spring 2024, I taught graduate students enrolled in EDU 610, the graduate-level version of EDU 310.
Below is the Spring 2024 course syllabus which I collaborated on with my co-teaching assistants and course instructor. Additionally, you will find my section addendum, materials from my course section, and the slidedeck from my course lecture. In the menu, under "Evaluations" you will find feedback from students in this course.
